Why Choose This Safari

  1. Remote & Untamed Landscape

    • The Chalbi Desert is Kenya’s only “real” desert — a vast salt pan framed by dunes and volcanic outcrops.

    • The terrain is stark but stunning, with wide open salt flats, intermittent dunes, and shifting landscapes informed by wind and geology.

  2. Kalacha Oasis

    • This hidden gem in the desert is a lush patch of palms and water, sustaining both wildlife and the local Gabbra nomadic communities.

    • The oasis is culturally significant: you’ll witness nomads watering livestock, community life, and possibly traditional dances or gatherings.

  3. Cultural Immersion

    • You will travel through regions inhabited by Gabbra and Rendille pastoralists, gaining insight into their way of life in one of Kenya’s harshest environments.

    • Visiting North Horr and Kalacha gives a chance to interact with local communities, observe camel pastoralism, and appreciate their resilience in the desert.

  4. Adventure & Exploration

    • Desert “cruising” in a 4×4 gives you access to remote dunes, salt pans, and lava rock areas.

    • The trip includes a professional Chalbi Desert tour driver-guide, in addition to your regular safari guide, ensuring you don’t miss significant geological or cultural features.

  5. Affordable Desert Safari

    • For a multi-day remote desert experience, this is relatively budget-friendly: US$ 530–670 per person according to Stejos.

    • Accommodation is in budget lodges and camps, giving a balance between exploring remote areas and keeping costs manageable.

  6. Supporting Local Conservation & Communities

    • By traveling through less-touristed northern Kenya, you contribute to community-based tourism and help support local populations through their involvement.

    • The trip fosters sustainable tourism in a region that doesn’t get the same volume of visitors as national parks.

Day 1: Nairobi → Marsabit

  • Depart from Nairobi early in a 4×4 (or as arranged).

  • Travel northwards into Marsabit County, crossing arid plains.

  • Arrive in Marsabit, check into a lodge or camp, and relax.

  • Evening at leisure — enjoy the night sky, desert silence, and prepare for the desert crossing ahead.

Day 2: Marsabit → Chalbi Desert → Kalacha Oasis / North Horr

  • After breakfast, drive into the Chalbi Desert. You’ll traverse salt flats, dunes, and rocky desert terrain.

  • Visit Kalacha Oasis, an extraordinary green island in the desert, where palm trees, springs, and camels congregate.

  • Explore the oasis and surrounding desert, take photos, and enjoy a true desert experience.

  • Overnight in or around North Horr (or the community camp as per Stejos).

Day 3: North Horr → Ngurunit Region

  • Early morning desert drive, possibly following camel routes or navigating dunes.

  • Head towards Ngurunit, another remote area near the desert edge, known for its harsh but captivating landscape.

  • Spend the afternoon exploring, relaxing, and absorbing the great silence of the desert.

  • Overnight in a desert camp or simple lodge.

Day 4: Ngurunit → Return to Nairobi

  • Enjoy a final morning in the desert: sunrise, desert colors, and perhaps wildlife or nomadic activity.

  • Depart Ngurunit and begin the return journey to Nairobi.

  • Arrive back, concluding the safari.
