The Mountain Bongo Returns: A New Era for Conservation Tourism in Kenya

Kenya’s conservation landscape just received a massive biological boost. On Monday, a specialized KLM flight touched down at JKIA, carrying four precious passengers: male Mountain Bongos from the Dvůr Králové Zoo in the Czech Republic.

Welcomed by a high-level delegation including Tourism CS Rebecca Miano, these antelopes represent more than just a wildlife transfer—they represent the survival of a species.

The Mountain Bongo is recognized by its vibrant chestnut coat and 10–15 white torso stripes, which provide perfect camouflage in the dappled light of Kenya’s high-altitude bamboo thickets.

Why This Matters Now

With fewer than 100 Mountain Bongos left in the wild, the species is currently "Critically Endangered." For decades, these "ghosts of the forest" have faced the threat of extinction due to habitat loss and disease.

The arrival of these four males is a strategic move to boost the genetic diversity at the Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary in Nanyuki. By introducing new bloodlines, the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) is ensuring that the next generation of bongos is resilient enough to eventually be released back into their ancestral homes in the Aberdares and Mt. Kenya forest.

A Win for Sustainable Tourism

At Stejos Tours and Travel, we believe that travel should be a force for good. The recovery of the Mountain Bongo adds a new layer of depth to the "Northern Circuit." Visitors to the Nanyuki and Laikipia regions now have the unique opportunity to learn about one of the most successful rewilding projects in Africa.

This isn’t just about seeing the "Big Five" anymore; it’s about witnessing the literal rebirth of a species.

Plan Your Conservation Safari

The best way to support these efforts is through sustainable, guided travel. Whether you are trekking the slopes of Mt. Kenya or enjoying a luxury stay in Nanyuki, you are contributing to the ecosystems that these bongos will soon call home.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Mountain Bongos are left in Kenya in 2026?

As of April 2026, the wild population of Mountain Bongos remains critically low, with fewer than 100 individuals estimated to be living in their natural habitats (primarily the Aberdares, Mt. Kenya, Eburu, and Mau Forests). However, the captive breeding and rewilding program at the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy (MKWC) has been highly successful, with the population there reaching 102 individuals following the latest arrival of four males from the Czech Republic.

Why were the Mountain Bongos brought from the Czech Republic to Kenya?

The four male bongos were translocated from the Dvůr Králové Zoo to address a "genetic bottleneck." Because the local population is so small, introducing new genetic lineages from international breeding programs is essential to prevent inbreeding. This strengthens the health and resilience of the herd, ensuring that the offspring are fit for eventual release into the wild as part of Kenya’s National Bongo Recovery and Action Plan.

Can tourists see the Mountain Bongos at the Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy?

Yes! Visitors to the Mawingu Mountain Bongo Sanctuary and the MKWC Animal Orphanage in Nanyuki can often see these elusive antelopes. While those being prepared for rewilding live in a vast, 776-acre protected forest to minimize human contact, the Conservancy offers educational tours where you can learn about the breeding program. At Stejos Tours and Travel, we can incorporate a visit to this sanctuary into any of our Nanyuki or Mt. Kenya safari itineraries.
